Stochastic methods were introduced to subsurface hydrology during the 1970s to address uncertainty in predictions caused by spatial variability of hydrologic properties. Since then, research using stochastic methods has blossomed. Consequently, our understanding of the complexity of subsurface processes and properties has significantly advanced.
