Therhizosphere, the boundary layer of soil surrounding and influenced by the plant root, is multiphase, heterogeneous, and biologically diverse. Recognized as playing a central role in plant nutrition, soil formation, and global biogeochemical cycles, the rhizosphere is being intensively studied. Web of Science (Thomson Reuters, New York) shows more than 750 articles published on the topic “rhizosphere” in the year 2007, up from 500 articles that were published in 2002.
