Visualization of flow, deformation, and strain in soils can provide insight for solving many geotechnical problems. However, experimental models to measure spatial deformation patterns within a soil mass are typically limited. Traditional soil sensors do not provide a continuous image of the measured continuum and often exhibit static and dynamic characteristics that are different from those of the surrounding soil. Synthetic transparent porous media can be used as surrogates to represent the behavior of natural soils in model tests to overcome these limitations.
