The Journal of Geology is proud to establish a new best-paper award: the Alfred T. Anderson Journal of Geology Best Paper Award, named in honor of the journal’s coeditor and editor from 1983 to 2008. This new annual award honors Fred Anderson’s many years of service and dedication to both the journal and the earth sciences and will shine a spotlight on the journal’s continued contributions to knowledge development and dissemination.

The award will be given annually for the best paper published in the past three years of the Journal of Geology. The Editor and the Board of Associate Editors will serve as the selection committee. The award will be announced at the annual Geological Society of America in the fall of each year. Winners will receive a $1,000 cash prize. The first Alfred T. Anderson Journal of Geology Best Paper Award will be announced at the 2024 GSA meeting in Anaheim, California for the best paper published in the Journal of Geology in 2021–2023.
