Interpretation of seismic reflection records is a blend of quantitative science and visual art. An interpreter uses the rules of wave propagation, realistic limits on impedances of rocks and accepted principles of stratigraphic deposition and structural deformation to arrive at a geologic understanding of a seismic section. This application of science, however, seldom produces a unique answer, and the obligation to consider alternative interpretations provides plenty of latitude for creative imagining.
