Geomechanics is the study of the mechanical properties, conditions, and behavior of the subsurface. It can be applied at a range of scales, from tectonic to regional studies, through reservoir characterization, down to well studies, which can be vital for successful drilling, completion, and reservoir management. Geomechanics, therefore, plays an important role in the exploitation of hydrocarbons and especially in the development of unconventional resources.
