Iran has been a major player in oil and gas exploration and production since the early twentieth century. However, for nearly 40 years, little information on petroleum-related activities in Iran has been published in the United States or, to a large extent, globally. Political turmoil has isolated Iran since the late 1970s, but recent events have changed the situation and many of the internationally imposed sanctions have been lifted. Some international companies have started to engage Iran to partner in development and exploration activities.
