Abstract

The Leading Edge was not expected to be a publication that was an early, if not original, outlet for new geophysical concepts but that became one of its functions fairly early in its existence. Bob Hardage, the current SEG president, was arguably the first oil industry researcher to take advantage of this new forum to spread the word about a technology that he felt had significant potential. Less than a year after publication of the first issue of TLE, Hardage submitted “A new direction in seismology is down” which described vertical seismic profiling. Amazing as it seems today when the technique is widespread, the term VSP was then little known in the United States where most SEG members of the time were located.
