We examine some basic issues in elasticity of reservoir rocks that are of central importance for the hydro-carbon exploration and production technologies. Serious misconceptions appear to persist in these areas, and they may lead to dubious guidelines for log editing, synthetic forward modeling, AVO, and 4D studies. Our motivation here is to clarify some of these issues. We also identify challenges in relating the elastic properties of rocks to their microstructure; they concern “irregular” shapes of cracks and pores, and their proper quantitative characterization.
