Abstract

The science of rock physics provides the means by which geophysical measurements can be inverted for rock and fluid properties. As it is typically applied in the oil and gas industry, rock physics is usually focused on the measurement, modeling, and interpretation of elastic-wave propagation in sedimentary rocks. Most frequently, this involves the analysis and interpretation of P- and S-wave behavior, examination of VP/VS systematics, examination and application of Gassmann's equations, examination of anisotropic effects, and the analysis of attenuation and dispersion. A snapshot of the current state-of-the-art in this rapidly developing field can be found in the collection of papers presented at the 1st International Workshop on Rock Physics (1IWRP) available at http://1iwrp.rockphysicists.org/.
