Over the last several years, microseismic monitoring has quickly grown as a technology to map various reservoir processes. In particular, imaging hydraulic fracture stimulations is the most common application-thousands of fracs are imaged each year in various basins throughout North America. Associated with the growth of the technology, several technical workshops have recently been held (EAGE 2007 and 2009, SEG 2008, CSEG 2009) along with forums focused on the technology, as well as dedicated sessions at recent meetings sponsored by SEG, AAPG, SPE, and EAGE. Clearly the technology is topical and has cross-disciplinary interest in the petroleum industry.
