Abstract

In order to increase seismic resolution, we may call upon the methods of interactive design. This discipline draws upon elements of the interaction of two systems as a basis of increasing resolution. The most celebrated form of interactive design is the relationship of the artist with his object. No clearer statement can be found than that given by Michelangelo, “With chiseled touch, the stone unhewn and cold becomes a living mold. The more the marble wastes, the more the statue grows.” In our science, the artist is the geophysicist, the computer is the chisel, and the object is made up of the underground stone layers of the Earth. These layers can serve as a mold. The geophysicist must use the computer to chisel away the layers, as it were, to reveal the statue, namely a computer image of the subterranean Earth.
