Abstract

Elastic waves attenuate in earth. The number of wavelengths over which the amplitude decreases by a factor of ten is 0.733·Q, where Q is the quality factor. For VP = 3 km/s and frequency f = 30 Hz, the wavelength λ = VP/f = 0.1 km. Then for Q = 10, the amplitude decreases by a factor of 10 as the wave travels 0.733·Q·λ = 0.733 km.
