Resource exploration via seismic and gravity profiling had been established, theoretically and commercially, by the mid-1920s and the first electrical well logging was performed in 1929 so the time was right to start a professional society dedicated to all aspects of applied geophysics. That was accomplished in a very compressed timetable because of the initiative and energy of Donald C. Barton, already a dominating figure in the infant profession due to his leading role in the first discovery of commercial quantities of oil by a geophysical technique.
