Geophysics has long contained articles that are essentially descriptions of algorithms. Creating working source code from those descriptions has generally been left as an “exercise for the reader,” however. Although authors can already provide computer files to be archived online as a supplement to a paper (just as in the past some articles would come with supplementary material on microfiche), this has been used for data or executables, not source code. To encourage authors to provide source code so that readers may more easily reproduce their results, and to enable authors to receive due scholarly credit for the publication of source code, Geophysics is starting a new section, “Geophysical Software and Algorithms.”
