This paper demonstrates the importance of postprocessing the migrated images in amplitude versus angle (AVA) inversion analysis on prestack depth-migrated data. In so-called “kinematic” processing where only the traveltimes are used (NMO, DMO, prestack time or depth migration), the amplitude of the recorded signal is corrected by estimating the decay due to wave propagation in a layered homogeneous media. The reflectivity values are simply the amplitudes of preprocessed prestack CDPs or CIGs.
