In Texas applied geophysics for environmental assessments and remediation is boring … literally and figuratively! The state-of-the-art and conventional environmental-engineering approaches require the drilling of tens to hundreds of shallow core holes to characterize the geology at sites such as hazardous waste landfills and underground disposal wells. The use of nonintrusive geophysical methods is a luxury, not a requirement. A proposed “geoscience approach” would require fewer borings and be more cost-effective for the overall project. This approach requires the application of nonintrusive geophysical methods in an appropriate manner prior to drilling exploratory or delineation holes for assessments or characterization.
