Libya's oil reserves, estimated at 29.5 billion BOE (according to BP's Statistical Review of World Energy), are the eighth largest in the world. The majority of this oil is within Sirte Basin which has 70% of the proven hydrocarbons in the region.

Satellite imagery allows Libya's hydrocarbon systems to be understood in their regional context. The study described in this article used a complete set of georectified Landsat TM images at full resolution (30 m) for Libya and a composite mosaic subsampled at medium resolution (150 m) for the entire North African margin.
