“Look, John, I won't beat around the bush. We think you've been barking up the wrong tree. I don't know how to break this to you gently…your team is scheduled for termination.” The blow hit me like a truck. In just a few moments I felt disbelief, then anger, and finally hopelessness. My tie felt like a choke chain. You see, this was back in 1983 when indiscriminately destroying human assets was not yet considered good management, and my company, Mega Oil, still bragged about being “people oriented.” However, my research team was something different. We were a team in the true sense of the word. And I was team leader. The leader of the pack, so to speak.
