The newly-formed Near Surface Geophysics Section of the SEG held its first workshop at the 63rd Annual Meeting in Washington DC on 30 September 1993. The workshop, entitled “The Advancement of Environmental Geophysics”, was organized to provide a forum for discussing the forces which control the future of environmental geophysics. Environmental geophysics is now strong, but how long will it remain strong, and how much stronger can it be? Seven speakers, grouped in three panels, addressed this topic from several perspectives, with due consideration to existing laws, regulations, and funding opportunities.
