In the period 1966-1970, a number of chemical explosions were conducted off the Pacific coast of the United States, several of them large enough to be located teleseismically by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the International Seismological Centre (ISC). At least one (CHASE V) was described as the scuttling of a naval vessel through the disposal of surplus ammunition, with a yield of 1 kt (Northrop, 1968).
