It was more than fifty years ago, that seismologists in what was then Czechoslovakia deployed the first experimental broadband feedback seismometers in seismic stations in Poland and in Czechoslovakia (Plešinger and Horalek, 1976). Based on their experience Erhard Wielandt and his student Gunar Streckeisen at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule in Zürich, Switzerland, developed the first commercial broadband instrument, dubbed STS‐1 (Wielandt and Streckeisen, 1982).
