Communications officers (COs) can greatly help the communications efforts of scientists. Among many other aspects, they can help scientists define a clear message, schedule interviews, and detect and correct misinformation. Developing collaboration with COs takes a bit of time and effort, but when a largely felt earthquake occurs, they make the communication tasks of seismologists far easier to handle. Collaboration between seismologists and COs can be mutually beneficial for routine requests for information as well as after an earthquake occurrence that raised public’s interest.
