On 4 July 2019 southern California was rattled by the largest earthquake to occur in the region in nearly 20 yr, a moment magnitude (MW) 6.4 earthquake that occurred near Ridgecrest approximately 200 km north of Los Angeles. It was followed on 6 July by a larger MW 7.1 earthquake. The distribution of aftershocks made it clear from the beginning that this was a complex earthquake sequence involving rupture on multiple faults.
