We would like to introduce a new SRL column entitled “Communicating Science,” which focuses on communicating earthquake science to broad audiences (general public, scientists, policy makers, etc.). As seismologists, we communicate all the time using a variety of avenues, such as oral, written, and nonverbal communication. We believe that there is a strong need and interest within the seismological community to improve our communication skills, widen our perspectives, and share our knowledge and experience with each other.
There is a wealth of information on best practices in communication from other scientific fields, but this knowledge does not often reach seismologists....
