The Republic of Korea first constructed a permanent year‐round base named King Sejong Station on King George Island near the northern Antarctic Peninsula in 1988 (inset map in Fig. 1). Given the distance from the Antarctic continent, however, the extent of in‐depth research and international collaboration at this first station has been limited.
