On 11 March 2011, the Tohoku earthquake (Mw 9.0) hit the eastern part of Japan’s mainland off the Pacific coast, and killed more than 10,000 people, due mainly to a great tsunami in the immediate onshore region. Strong ground motions during the earthquake were observed in almost the whole region of Japan by K‐NET, KiK‐net organized by National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED), and the other seismometer networks.
