At 04:35 on Saturday 4 September 2010 local time (16:35 on 3 September UT) a moment magnitude (Mw) 7.1 earthquake struck approximately 10 km southeast of the town of Darfield and within 40 km of New Zealand's second largest city, Christchurch, causing extensive damage in the city and surrounding region.
