This report the Long Range Science Plan for Seismology (LRSPS) is the product of the 18–19 September 2008 workshop attended by more than 120 members of the seismological and broader Earth science research community, commissioned and supported by the National Science Foundation and coordinated by the IRIS Consortium. The fundamental LRSPS goals were to summarize the central importance of seismology to a wide range of Earth sciences and to illuminate seismologically driven research opportunities. The report centers on 10 “grand challenges” and includes recommendations on broad disciplinary needs for sustaining healthy research funding, educational resources, and core facilities.
