With reference to the instructive exchange between Roger Musson and Robert Reitherman on the subject of Charles F. Richter, (Letters, SRL 79-4, July/August 2008: 494) and about which work might have influenced his Elementary Seismology, I am reasonably certain that CFR had his German seismology directly from Beno Gutenberg. I was an assistant to Richter around the time that he wrote his book, and he was not really fluent in German.
