James Devine, the senior advisor for science applications at the U.S. Geological Survey, and P. Patrick Leahy, former acting director of the USGS, each recently received the Distinguished Senior Professional Award for their leadership and accomplishment within the Department of the Interior. Devine provides bureau policy and guidance on natural hazards, nuclear waste, and critical structures such as nuclear power plants and dams. Leahy retired this year after 33 years of government service in various technical and managerial positions.
