SSA member Walter J. Arabasz has been honored with the U.S. Geological Survey's John Wesley Powell Award for his outstanding scientific leadership in helping the public and elected officials understand and reduce the impact of earthquakes. The award, named after the scientist who explored the Colorado River and later served as director of the USGS, recognizes individuals or groups not employed by the federal government who contribute to USGS objectives. Arabasz, who is director of the University of Utah Seismograph Stations, has conducted earthquake monitoring and research for more than 30 years.1
