1On 28 April 2007, Lawrence A. Drake, one of the last surviving Jesuit seismologists, died in St. Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, after struggling with leukemia for seven years.

Fr. Drake was born in Camperdown, Victoria, Australia, and he entered the Society of Jesus in 1949. Since 1951, he had been associated with Riverview Observatory in Riverview, New South Wales, a Jesuit observatory that was founded in 1907; Fr. Drake became its director in 1965.
