The magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck the state of Colima, Mexico, on 21 January 2003 caused 17 confirmed fatalities and damage totaling almost $130 million. This is the first joint venture for the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) and the Mexican Society for Earthquake Engineering (SMIS), and it covers the geostatistical background, seismology and tectonics, geotechnical conditions, lifelines, housing, education and healthcare infrastructure, public and commercial buildings, the response of the Mexican Civil Protection System, and socioeconomic effects.
