USGS has created a new map to show visually in detail the intensity of shaking in San Francisco and in communities such as Santa Rosa during the 1906 earthquake. Techniques used to create the new map included the Rossi-Forel Intensity Map, made by A. C. Lawson in the 1908 report of the California Earthquake Investigation Committee, the MMI maps made in 1983 and 1993 from historical accounts, and updates made by locating new sites where shaking was described in Lawson's report and by conducting new investigations at other sites.
