I strongly disagree with Wang et al.'s (2005) first point that the similarity in hazard between New Madrid and San Francisco is “a consequence of the higher ground-motion uncertainties (both the median and its standard deviation).”

The primary point of my paper (Frankel, 2004) was that the similarity of seismic hazard for the New Madrid and San Francisco areas, for high-frequency measures of ground motion and low probabilities, is caused by the higher median ground motions expected for the central and eastern U.S. (CEUS) earthquakes compared to western U.S. (WUS) earthquakes with the same moment magnitudes....
