My work as a seismologist can be separated into four periods: (1) Ph.D. research, at Scripps Institute of Oceanography, on source mechanisms of aftershocks of the San Fernando earthquake; (2) postdoc investigations, at MIT, of the effects of surface geology on seismic motions; (3) management of geologic hazards programs of the (now) California Geological Survey; and (4) creation and management of a California-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to reduce earthquake risk in the world's most vulnerable countries.
