On 3 February 2002 at 09:11:28 GMT an earthquake of Mw 6.5 occurred in inner southwestern Turkey in the Sultandağı-Çay region, 220 km southwest of Ankara (Figure 1). 46 deaths, 318 injuries, and moderate to heavy damage to 622 buildings occurred as a result of the earthquake. The mainshock was followed by three aftershocks larger than Mw 5.
