On the 12th of August 2002, the Spanish seismological community lost one of its most distinguished members, Gonzalo Payo. He obtained a degree in mathematics in 1958 from the University of Zaragoza. In 1964 he was awarded a doctoral degree in Geographical Engineering. In 1951 he joined the Instituto Geográfico Nacional and began working at the Toledo Observatory, of which he became director in 1965, a post he held until 1995.
