Okal and Synolakis (2001) discuss important issues regarding the origin of the complex and controversial 17 July 1998 Papua New Guinea (PNG) tsunami. These comments are appreciated by the author in that they allow a more complete discussion within the seismological community of this highly destructive event that claimed the lives of over 2,200 people.
