I agree with Lucy Jones (SRL 71:4, July/August 2000, 395-396) that we should use a physical unit for measuring the size of an earthquake, e.g., seismic moment, and name it after Kei Aki. There are two issues Lucy raised: (1) naming the unit of seismic moment after Aki and the choice of defining 1 aki, and (2) replacing the Richter scale by seismic moment so that the public may be less confused.
