BSSA will publish a special section on the 16 October 1999 Hector Mine, California earthquake. Many factors combine to make this Mw 7.1 event of particular scientific interest. The earthquake occurred in the eastern California shear zone only seven years after the June 1992 Landers Mw 7.3 earthquake, despite recurrence times for both events of a few thousand years. A recently updated regional seismic network and a regional geodetic network recorded the Hector Mine earthquake, providing abundant high-quality data.
