On 16–18 March 2000 a symposium was held at USC to honor Keiiti Aki. Over fifty seismologists, including many of Aki's former graduate students, were in attendance. Dr. Aki is now retiring after thirty-five years of service in the field of seismology. Aki received his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo in 1958 and worked as a postdoc at Caltech in the early 1960's. He taught at MIT from 1966 until 1984, at which time he joined the University of Southern California (where he occupied the Keck Chair, Department of Earth Sciences).
