Bertha Jeffreys, wife of Sir Harold (1891-1989), died on 18 December 1999 in Cambridge, England, at age 96. Bertha, not herself a seismologist, was known widely to the profession through warm hospitality and afternoon teas at the Jeffreys' home on Huntingdon Road, Cambridge. She accompanied Sir Harold to numerous IUGG, IASPEI, and SSA assemblies and meetings and on his sojourns at Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, in Texas, and elsewhere. While Harold was retiring and somewhat uncommunicative, Bertha's warmth and direct manner soon worked to make easy any social encounter.
