The M 7.1 Hector Mine earthquake occurred on 16 October 1999 about 200 km northwest of metropolitan Los Angeles. The Los Angeles and Vicinity Strong Motion Network, operated by the University of Southern California, had 78 stations in the field at that time. All stations were operational but only 39 triggered because the motions throughout the area were small.

The records were digitized, processed, and posted on the Web within a few days after recovery. ASCII files and PDF plots of Volume 1, 2, and 3 data for all 39 stations were made available in early November. The Web address...
