The House of Representatives Committee on Science, Subcommittee on Basic Research, held a hearing on 20 October 1999 on “The Turkey, Taiwan, and Mexico Earthquakes: Lessons Learned.” The Subcommittee on Basic Science is the same committee that approves the reauthorization of NEHRP and reports on issues of earthquake science to the full Committee on Science. The hearing had four witnesses, including SSA president Terry Wallace. The Chairman of the Subcommittee, Rep. Nick Smith (R-Michigan), expressed the hope that “the lessons we learn studying earthquakes abroad will help us be more prepared when it happens here.”
