Margaret Leinen has been chosen to head the National Science Foundation's (NSF) geoscience directorate. She will assume her new position in January 2000, succeeding Robert W. Corell. Leinen is a highly regarded researcher in paleooceanography and paleoclimatology at the University of Rhode Island. As head of NSF's geoscience directorate, Leinen will manage a budget of approximately $470 million annually. Her selection followed a national search.
