Abstract

In this study we determined rupture durations and stress drops for twelve earthquakes in New England and vicinity using the pulse duration matching method. For the earthquakes rupture durations increase from 0.035 sec to 0.143 sec as magnitudes increase from 2.3 to 4.0. Stress drops range from 2.6 bars to 20.1 bars with a mean stress drop of 7.4 bars. The results are consistent with those of earthquakes with similar magnitudes in northeastern North America given by Atkinson (1993) and Boatwright (1994). Stress drops of earthquakes in New England are much lower than those of earthquakes with similar magnitudes in southern California given by Frankel and Kanamori (1983), suggesting that the two regions may be under different tectonic stresses.
