Abstract
Earthquake swarms are typical of Western Bohemia and the Vogtland region. The 1985/86 earthquake swarm lasted about two months (Dec. 1985 – Jan. 1986). It split into four active periods. Several thousands of earthquakes were recorded. The strongest shock was on Dec. 21, 1985 at 10 h 16 m UTC. Its local magnitude was 5.1 (FRG, Federal Republic of Germany) and 4.6 (CIPE, Central Institute for Physics of the Earth, Potsdamn, GDR) and epicentral intensity Io = 7° MSK-64. A rich macroseismic and instrumental material provides new knowledge concerning the character of individual earthquakes and the swarm pattern. The swarm did not differ in character from the old ones.
