Abstract

Ten earthquakes that occurred in China, Mangolia, Russia, Nepal, Pakistan, and Afghanistan during 1966–1967 were relocated, and their mechanism solutions were investigated using the first motions of P and PKP and the polarizations (or first motions) of S waves. The results of this study show predominance of normal and strike–slip faulting for 4 Chinese earthquakes, and a large component of thrust and strike–slip faulting for 2 Mangolian earthquakes. Normal faulting for Russian earthquake and thrust faulting for Nepalese earthquake were obtained. Mechanism solution for one earthquake in Pakistan shows a large component of strike-slip and thrust faulting, whereas thrusting mechanism was derived for an intermediate-depth earthquake that occurred along Afghanistan–USSR border.
